Mount Vodno & Millennium Cross: Skopje's Big Viewpoint
A 66-metre steel cross on a 1,066-metre summit, visible from every corner of Skopje — the Millennium Cross is the city's fixed point of orientation and its best panorama. The mountain behind it is a full recreational park of pine forest, marked trails and a scenic short cable car. It is the classic 'see all of Skopje at once' experience, barely half an hour from the airport by car.

What you'll see
The centrepiece is the Millennium Cross, a 66-metre steel lattice on twelve columns (one per apostle) that lights up at night and towers over the Vardar from 1,066 metres. From the platform beside it the whole capital unwinds below — the Stone Bridge, the bazaar's minarets, the waterfront — and on clear days the Šar Mountains toward Kosovo. The cable car from Middle Vodno covers 1,600 metres and 480 vertical metres in under five minutes, its eight-seat gondolas floating over pine forest (28 cabins, built by Doppelmayr, opened in 2011). Hikers can instead climb the roughly 2 km path from Middle Vodno in 30–60 minutes, or push on along the ridge trails that cross the mountain toward the Matka side. On the summit you'll find a café and souvenir shop; on the meadows below, watch for paragliders — Vodno is a popular take-off site. The southern slope hides the 12th-century church at Nerezi, an easy add-on by car.
A short history
The cross was raised in 2002 to mark two thousand years of Christianity in these lands, recalling St Paul's passage through the region; a dedication ceremony that August drew a reported 70,000 people. At 66 metres it ranks among the tallest crosses in the world, and it has been politically debated ever since, having reshaped the skyline without public consultation. An interior elevator, installed in 2018, opened the viewing level to non-climbers. The ropeway capped a longer civic wish — Skopje had talked about a Vodno cable car since the 1970s — and the €6.7 million Doppelmayr line finally opened on 3 June 2011, run by the city transport company JSP. It has struggled with upkeep and has been out of service since April 2026 while the city hunts a certified repair contractor, so check locally before counting on it.
Getting there from Skopje Airport
The lower cable-car station at Middle Vodno sits about 26 km from SKP — 30–35 minutes by car, mostly on motorway. Public transport from the airport is impractical: you'd ride into the city, then catch bus 25 from Transport Center to Middle Vodno. Note that the gondola has been closed since April 2026 pending repairs, with no confirmed reopening date — the walk from Middle Vodno to the top takes 30–60 minutes on a paved-then-dirt path. For airport arrivals a pre-booked transfer is the sensible choice: your driver takes the Vodno access road as far as Middle Vodno, times your pickup, and has you back at the terminal in half an hour. If the cable car reopens, expect around 120 MKD (≈ €2) return, closed Mondays and the last Tuesday of the month.

FAQ
How long do I need on Vodno?
Two to three hours covers the ride or the hike, the cross and the view, with coffee at the summit café. Add another hour if you want to explore the ridge trails toward the Matka side.
Is it good for children?
Very — the gondola is a treat for kids and the area around the cross is open and easy. If the cable car is closed, the 30–60 minute uphill walk suits older children; bring water either way.
What can I combine it with?
The Nerezi monastery is ten minutes down the road on the same mountain, and Matka Canyon lies just across the ridge — a driver can link all three in a day. Back in town, the Old Bazaar makes a natural afternoon pair.
Is there food on the mountain?
Yes — a café and restaurant by the cross, plus the Hotel Vodno complex lower down with a big terrace. On summer evenings locals drive up simply to eat with the city lights below.
